Reverse-engineering food products based on their ingredient labels can be a fun and rewarding way to bring back those flavors you love. I’ll dive into this process in a new series of videos focusing on recreating a Trader Joe’s discontinued favorite and other iconic products.

Step 1: Read the Ingredient List Carefully
The first thing you’ll notice on any food label is the ingredient list, which is required to be ordered by quantity, from the largest to the smallest. This gives us a great starting point for our recreation. For example, if olive oil is the first ingredient, it’s a major component of the product. This order gives valuable clues about how to structure the recipe.
In my upcoming video series, I’ll show you how to break down ingredient lists from popular Trader Joe’s products, starting with a fan-favorite sauce that was recently discontinued.
Step 2: Break Down the Ingredients
The ingredients can be split into categories like:
- Main Ingredients: These are usually the first few items forming the base of the product.
- Flavor Enhancers: Think of spices, herbs, or anything that boosts flavor, like garlic powder or sweeteners.
- Binders and Thickeners: These affect the texture, such as starches or gums.
- Preservatives: These keep the product shelf-stable, though, in your homemade version, you may not need them.
As part of my video series, we’ll reverse-engineer these different components, giving you the knowledge to recreate flavors like Trader Joe’s spicy hummus or their famous sauces at home.
Step 3: Estimate Proportions
Unfortunately, ingredient labels don’t include quantities, but we can make educated guesses. Starting with similar recipes, I’ll guide you through how to estimate the proportions of each ingredient.
In one of my videos, we’ll tackle this challenge with a well-loved discontinued Trader Joe’s sauce. Sign up for Fugosa Insider Access to be the first to know when the video drops!
Step 4: Research Ingredients
Certain ingredients, like preservatives or emulsifiers, might not be necessary in homemade versions. But understanding them helps in approximating texture and flavor. I’ll explain the role of these ingredients and offer alternatives that work in a home kitchen.
I’ll also provide tips in the videos on replacing artificial additives with natural ingredients so you can enjoy a cleaner, healthier version of the foods you miss.
Step 5: Experiment and Adjust
Once you have the breakdown and proportions, it’s time to experiment! I’ll show you in real time how I recreate Trader Joe’s favorites, making adjustments along the way. Don’t be afraid to tweak ingredients to suit your own preferences.
With Fugosa Insider Access, you’ll receive exclusive tips and behind-the-scenes looks at my process. You’ll be the first to know when a new reverse-engineering video is available.
Step 6: Customize Your Version
Once you’ve nailed the basic recreation, consider adding your own flair. The best part about reverse-engineering food is that you can tailor it to your preferences. Want it spicier? Add more chili flakes. Looking for a healthier option? Swap out sugar for a natural sweetener.
This kind of flexibility is part of the fun, and I’ll be sharing ideas in my videos for customizing your favorite recipes.

Trader Joe’s Spicy Hummus Discontinued December 2023
Ingredients: Cooked chickpeas, water, canola oil, tahini, jalapeño peppers, garlic, lemon juice, salt, cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper, citric acid, potassium sorbate.
How to Reverse-Engineer It: Trader Joe’s Spicy Hummus was a go-to for those who loved a little heat in their dip. We’ll break down the ingredients to recreate that spicy goodness at home.
- Main Ingredients: Chickpeas, tahini, and water make up the core of the hummus. The chickpeas provide the base, while tahini adds creaminess.
- Spicy Elements: Jalapeño peppers, cayenne pepper, and paprika bring the heat, making this a true “spicy” hummus.
- Flavor Enhancers: Garlic, cumin, and lemon juice add brightness and depth.
- Preservatives: Potassium sorbate and citric acid preserve freshness, but fresh lemon juice and careful storage will suffice for a homemade version.
Recipe: In a food processor, combine 1 can of cooked chickpeas, 2 tablespoons tahini, 2 tablespoons canola oil, 1 small jalapeño (seeded if you prefer less heat), 1 clove garlic, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, ½ teaspoon cumin, ½ teaspoon paprika, ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper, and salt to taste. Blend until smooth, adding water as needed for your desired consistency. Taste and adjust spices for heat.
